God is not a genie

“So you have pain now; but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.  On that day you will ask nothing of me.  Very truly, I tell you, if you ask anything of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.” (John 16:22-23)

This is one of those verses where part of it gets taken out of context and thrown around as a way of manipulating others and God.  I am guilty of it in this case. “If you ask anything of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.”  I used that against God in a mighty way when my dorm mom, Miz, died during my senior year of high school. What does a church do?

Sunday was the 25th Anniversary of the ELCA.  To honor the mission of the church over the last 25 years, congregations were encouraged to do some kind of service project that demonstrated the themes “God’s Work, Our Hands,” (ELCA’s motto) or “All Things Being Made New” (the 25th Anniversary slogan).  Here at Advent, we have our heads and calendars filled with things having to do with merging with another church and taking on a second campus.   Continue reading What does a church do?
