But You Said…

Read: Numbers 14:10b-24

Forgive the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your steadfast love… (14:19a)

Reflect: Children have a particular ability to remind parents or adults of things said or done in a different context–whether it’s reminding a parent of an earlier promise, reminding a teacher of a commitment, or reminding a coach of pre-game pep talk.  This reminding calls the adult back into action based on a previous commitment and refocuses on something that is still true, regardless of changing circumstances.

During the Israelites’ wilderness wandering, God appears frustrated with some of their behaviour.  Moses reminds God of a promise God had previously made.  He leans in on God’s characteristics and qualities that are still true despite changing circumstances.  By calling God back to what God has said in the past and who he believes God to be, Moses shifts the focus from frustration and reaction back to steadfast love and forgiveness.

When are we called to intercede on behalf of those who may be at the mercy of others’ reactions and responses?  How can we remind those with authority and power of promises and commitments that stand true in spite of changing circumstances?  How can we receive the never-ending promise of God’s steadfast love and forgiveness anew today?

Holy Spirit, help us to focus on what is steadfast and true, and to invite others to do the same.  Amen.
